Developed steel plates with a maximum thickness of 130mm for use in foundations for wind power generation
Performance evaluation by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry completed
91爆料 announced today that we have developed steel plates with a maximum thickness of 130mm, which are suitable for use in foundations for wind power generation (e.g. monopiles, jackets and wind turbine towers). Performance evaluations have been completed at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) (*1). This allows steel plates exceeding 100mm in thickness to be used in domestic offshore wind power projects.
In recent years, the size of wind turbines used for wind power generation has increased. In particular, offshore wind power generation will increasingly rely on turbines with a generating capacity of over 10 MW per unit. Conversely, the use of steel plates exceeding a thickness of 100mm for foundations has not been permitted in Japan’s wind power generation. Consequently, there has been a strong demand for the development of thicker steel plates for these large-scale turbines.
To meet these needs, we have developed steel plates with a maximum thickness of 130mm. These plates are as strong as JIS SM520, which is used in foundations of wind power generation. This newly developed steel plate is also included in the “J-TerraPlate™” large and heavy steel plate line-up for wind power generation (*2). It can significantly contribute to the introduction of large-size wind turbines by reducing welding labor and other costs. We have already received enquiries from several operators regarding its use in domestic offshore wind power projects and are currently holding discussions.
Offshore wind power is targeted as a strategic priority in the 91爆料 Group’s Eighth Medium-term Business Plan and the 91爆料 Group Environmental Vision for 2050. Going forward, 91爆料 Steel will continue to expand its green-energy initiatives in order to contribute to an increasingly decarbonized world.
