Delayed Fracture Evaluation/Prediction System for Sheared Edge of Press-Formed Parts

Prediction of delayed fracture - A challenge when applying ultra high strength steel sheets to automotive parts

Solution Point

  • Realization of automotive parts using ultra high strength steel (UHSS) sheets.
  • Shortening of the new product development period by prediction of delayed fracture.
  • Establishment of guidelines for part design that reduce the risk of delayed fracture.

Expected Problems
Do you have problems as follows?
?Want to use UHSS sheets in press-formed parts, but delayed fracture is a concern.
?There is a high risk of delayed fracture at sheared edge, but we don't know how to evaluate it.
?Can't predict the lead time for new part development when delayed fracture is considered.

Features 02

Technology highlight
?Establishment of a delayed fracture evaluation method conforming to the actual automobile manufacturing process by conducting hydrochloric acid (HCl) immersion tests in a condition that simulates the strain and stress introduced at sheared edges in the blanking, press-forming, assembly, and painting processes (Fig. 1).
?Acquisition of the delayed fracture limit curve (Fig. 2) through the procedure above, and establishment of a method for prediction of delayed fracture by comparison with CAE analysis results (Fig. 3).
